JULY 17, 2005 (8:30PM)
We've just finished putting the last of the equipment away from this weekend's event and I've finally had the chance to "quickly" post the "unofficial" results. We'll be verifying the data to make them offical in the next few days. It was great to host all of you here in beautiful Lake Tahoe.

Congratulations to the following runners for their outstanding performances which earned them their respective titles of "2005 Road Runners Club of America National Trail 50K and 50M Champions!"

2004 Tahoe Rim Trail 50K/50M Cancellation Policy

Because of the devastating affects of the Waterfall Fire west of Carson City, Nevada and just east of the Tahoe Rim Trail within the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park (at an estimated 8,723 acres it's already considered to be the most devastating wildfire in western Nevada's history) Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn found it necessary to close the Park's backcountry to all uses. This resulted in the eventual and unfortunate cancellation of the 2004 Tahoe Rim Trail 50K/50M Endurances Runs. Due to the extreme fire behavior and rugged terrain this decision was made not only to minimize any possible conflicts with fire suppression efforts but to maximize the safety of our runners.

We understand how disappointing this cancellation has been to our participants from all corners of the Nation (not to mention our volunteers and management team). Therefore, we have developed the following "Cancellation Policy" which we hope you will find to be fair and equitable to everyone considering these uncontrollable circumstances.

All participants registered for the 2004 event will be able to choose between rolling over their registration to either the 2005 or 2006 event or they can donate the proceeds from their 2004 entry fees towards the victims of the Waterfall Fire (we will investigate ways to allow these funds to be used locally for those who lost their homes).

We sincerely hope that you will find these options an acceptable compensation for your registration fees. In either case we will ship your event fleece jacket, embroidered with our event logo, to you. Please email your choice to trt50k50m@sbcglobal.net. Thanks to everyone who has already contacted us to share your understanding, support and generosity by contributing towards Waterfall Fire victim relief. We also donated all parishable foods from the event directly to the fire suppression crews assigned to the Waterfall Fire.

Fortunately, the western flank of the fire did not reach any of our existing course (although it came within 1/2 mile from Snow Valley Peak) so our course will remain the same in 2005.

In closing I also want to share our sincere appreciation to officials from the Nevada State Parks, USDA Forest Service, the Governor's Office and the Waterfall Incident Management Team. During this chaotic time of devastating personal property loss, resource damage and potential human injury or loss, they continued to work closely with us to avoid cancellation of our event unless absolutely necessary.

Fire report from Cheryl Surface, Lake Tahoe Nevada State Parks Backcountry Ranger

All- Just a quick update. The fire barely touched the park along the Lakeview Road near the water tanks. It also came into the park a bit by the Ash Canyon-East Snow Valley Road area. I estimate less than 50-100 acres. The park is still as pristine as before the fire. WHEW!

Lakeview Road and Musgrove Road have received HEAVY traffic usage and a plan is being formulated to repair those access points after the fire activity has died down.

The Backcountry will officially open to visitor and resource traffic at 5PM on 7/18/04. The Backcountry closure will still be effect for the Hobart/Red House Area. We will have signs posted at Hobart/Laxalt Junction restricting access down Sunflower Hill and over to Hobart Reservoir and Red House. The Red House Flume Trail will remain closed as well as Musgrove Canyon Access.

North Canyon, the Tahoe Rim Trail from Spooner North to Mt. Rose/Tahoe Meadows, and the Flume Trail will all be open for visitor traffic. We appreciate your commitment to Lake Tahoe Nevada State Parks during this tragic fire activity.

Cheryl

(It is my understanding from several reliable sources within the wildland fire services represented at the Waterfall Fire that Cheryl's knowledge of the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park's backcountry and several years of fire behaviour experience with the Bureau of Land Management helped convince Waterfall Fire officials to change their suppression strategies which most likely kept the fire from spreading into the State park. WAY TO GO CHERYL!

Cheryl is a member of the Tahoe Mountain Milers Running Club and an ultra runner who was registered to run again in this year's event. --David--)

TRT 50K/50M STATUS AS OF 7-16 @ 6 AM

Good morning,

As of 6 a.m. this morning we, unfortunately, do not have any firm information for you regarding the status of tomorrow’s Tahoe Rim Trail 50K/50M Endurance Runs. The very latest on the Waterfall Fire is that it has consumed 9100 acres, 14 homes and is burning north towards the Washoe Valley and west towards the Tahoe Rim Trail. Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn has closed the entire Nevada State Park backcountry and Spooner Lake State Park (our event staging area).

With permission from the Nevada State Parks we started marking the course early yesterday morning but as the fire became very active mid-morning they notified us that we’d have to pull out of the backcountry. If you’re interested here are some pictures that I took on the first day of the fire from Carson City and a few yesterday morning while we were marking the course:

http://community.webshots.com/user/tahoedwc

We met with Nevada State Park officials yesterday to review any possible alternatives. They have been VERY helpful and want to give us every chance to continue with the event, most likely in a much modified version. We are also very understanding that if, based primarily on the safety of the fire suppression crews and the runners, that we may find it necessary to cancel.

Before I head out the door this morning to meet with Co-RD Kevin Bigley and the State Park official to finalize our fate I wanted to let each of you know that we’re doing everything possible to prepare for those of you who will still be coming to Lake Tahoe. We will update answering machine messages, web site info and last minute phone trees but I know that many of you will need to make your decision this morning (if not earlier) as to whether you will come or not. Here’s by best guess and most candid guess on the status of this year’s event; I think the odds are 4 to 1 against us. I hope this is helpful in your decision making.

If you do decide to come to Tahoe we’ll do everything we can to make your visit enjoyable. Will have information available at the entrance to Spooner Lake State Park and at Fleet Feet Sports in Carson City ( 3246 N. Carson Street, #121 ) with updated information about any possible change of course or cancellation information. We’re looking into the possibility of organizing alternative group runs on different trails within the Lake Tahoe Basin for those that just want to go for a run. And if we do find it necessary to cancel we will contact each of you with our decisions for any possible compensation.

Obviously, our biggest concern is for your safety and that of the fire fighters. There are numerous issues that need to be addressed in order for officials to make their final decision. We, the board of the TRT 50K/50M Endurance Runs understand the difficulties they face and stand behind whatever decision they make. Our prayers are with the firefighter and those who have or might loose their homes.

Thank you for your understanding during this time of natural disaster. If you do decide not to come we hope to see you again in the future.

UNCLAIMED DROP BAGS – We have several items that were left behind at the start/finish and/or drop bags that were returned from both the Mt. Rose and Tunnel Creek Aid Stations that we’re trying to reconnect with their owners. Many of them have numbers so we’ll soon be able to identify their individual owners but some do not. If you are missing something left at an aid station drop area please contact us by e-mail or call (530) 542-3424 so we can make arrangements to return your property (or let us know that they are disposable).

The “Gondola Fire” (670 acres) on the south shore of Lake Tahoe does not currently pose a threat to the TRT 50K/50M event and is nearly contained. The fire is approximately 15 miles south of the event.

Sensitive plant species found on race course – but with the help of the USDA Forest Service and Nevada State Parks personnel we’ve identified a short and acceptable detour around this sensitive plant population. Within the past two weeks we’ve worked closely with officials from both the Forest Service and State Parks to locate, identify and take necessary action to protect a small population of Galena Creek Rock Cress (Arabis rigiddissima variation demota). There are only two known occurrences in California (near Martis Peak) and eleven in Nevada in the Carson Range. Two of these are in the Lake Tahoe Basin; one near Mt. Rose and the other (bisected by the Tahoe Rim Trail) on the northwest side of Marlette Peak. Although there is not enough time to construct new trail we have been given the authorization to “flag” an approximately ¼-mile detour through a lightly vegetated area. We’ll have a course marshal there to guide you through the detour. Please help us in our effort to protect this special plant population by using the detour and staying off the temporarily closed section of trail.
